Man's best friend tends to love carpets! Dogs adore carpets for so many wonderful reasons - carpets are soft, warm, and nice to sleep on. Unfortunately, putting their scent and marking their territory on that bran new carpet is a fun hobby for them too!
If the scent stays on the carpet, tendency is for them to keep peeing on the same spot over and over again. Don't worry dogs do this mostly because of instinct and definitely not because of spite. When your pet takes a bathroom break on your carpet, make sure to clean the area immediately to avoid permanent stains and to be able to more effectively remove the scent dog urine gives.
Here are a few tips for Scottsdale pet owners on cleaning that mess your pet has left on your carpet.
1. No to Ammonia. Never use cleaning products with ammonia in them because dog urine contains ammonia. Read labels carefully. Using cleaning products with ammonia would clean the stain but would still leave a smell that dogs would interpret as their scent. That odor would cause your dog to repeatedly return to that spot to pee. Remember, a dog's sense of smell is so much better than ours and just a hint of ammonia odor can cause them to think that the carpet is an allowable "bathroom" for them.
2. Paper Towels or Heavy Cloth. Use several layers of paper towels or heavy cloth to absorb as much liquid from your carpet. Place heavy books over them or stand over them if necessary. Do these until you cannot get any more liquid off of the carpet.
3. Simple Cleaning Solution. Apply a cleaning solution to your pet's mess before the carpet gets a permanent stain. Liberally use a mixture of 50% white vinegar and 50% water on the affected area and ensure that the mixture reaches deep carpet fibers. The vinegar helps neutralize the scent of ammonia in your dog's urine. Then blot the area using the paper towels/cloth method. To remove excess moisture, you may also use a wet and dry vacuum extractor.
4. Deodorizing Technique. Use baking soda and a simple deodorizing solution to eliminate urine scent. Sprinkle baking soda on top of the affected area. Over the baking soda, pour a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide combined with ordinary liquid dishwashing solution. Use rubber gloves in handling this solution. Allow this to completely dry and then vacuum thoroughly.
These tips will surely help you save your carpets and hopefully keep your dogs from leaving urine stains on them again.
